What is the EU drone license?

The EU drone license is a mandatory document for all drone pilots in the European Union. Since January 1, 2021, EU Regulation 2019/947 establishes uniform rules for the operation of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in Europe.

The drone license is issued by your national aviation authority. After passing the exam, you receive your certificate as a PDF document — which you can convert into a digital wallet pass with drone-pass.com.

Anyone who wants to fly a drone weighing 250 grams or more — or a drone with a camera, regardless of weight — needs at least the EU A1/A3 competency certificate.

Categories A1/A3 and A2 explained

A1/A3

Basic drone license

The EU A1/A3 competency certificate is mandatory for drones from 250g or with a camera. Subcategory A1 allows flying lightweight drones (under 250g) near people. A3 allows heavier drones, but only at a safe distance from people. Online exam, valid for 5 years.

A2

Advanced drone license

The EU A2 remote pilot certificate allows flying drones up to 4 kg near uninvolved persons. Prerequisites are the A1/A3 certificate, practical self-training, and a supervised theory exam. Valid for 5 years.
