Why You Need a License for Your DJI Drone

Under EU Regulation 2019/947, all drone operators in Europe must register and most must hold a remote pilot certificate. This applies to every DJI drone sold in the EU — from the lightweight Mini series to professional Matrice models.

Even the DJI Mini 4 Pro, which weighs just 249g (under the 250g threshold), still requires operator registration because it has a camera. Flying without proper registration and certification can result in fines of up to several thousand euros depending on your country.

The good news: getting your A1/A3 certificate is straightforward. Most national aviation authorities offer an online exam that takes about 30–45 minutes. Once you have your certificate PDF, you can convert it into a digital wallet pass with drone-pass.com for easy access whenever you fly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to fly a DJI Mini?
The DJI Mini series (Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Mini 4 Pro) weighs under 250g and falls into EASA class C0. While you can technically fly without a certificate in subcategory A1, you are still required to register as a drone operator and it is strongly recommended to have at least the A1/A3 certificate. Some EU countries require it regardless of weight if the drone has a camera.
Which license do I need for a DJI Air 3 or Mavic 3?
The DJI Air 3 (720g) and Mavic 3 series (895–958g) require at minimum the A1/A3 EU drone certificate. With a C1 class label, they can fly in subcategory A1 (near but not over people). Without the C1 label (legacy models), they fall under A3 rules (must fly far from people). For closer operations near uninvolved people, the A2 certificate is needed.
What about DJI FPV and Avata drones?
DJI FPV (795g) and Avata 2 (377g) do not have EASA class labels, so they are treated as 'legacy' drones under transitional rules. You need at least the A1/A3 certificate and must fly under A3 rules: keeping a safe distance from uninvolved people and flying in areas where no uninvolved people are expected.
Can I store my DJI drone license in Apple Wallet?
Yes! Your EASA drone pilot certificate (required for DJI drones in the EU) can be converted into an Apple Wallet pass. Upload your certificate PDF to drone-pass.com, pay €2.99, and get a digital pass with your name, registration, categories, and verification QR code — always accessible on your phone when you fly.
What is a C0/C1/C2 class label?
EASA class labels (C0 through C6) indicate which rules a drone must follow in the Open Category. C0 (under 250g) is the least restrictive. C1 (under 900g) allows flying near people. C2 (under 4kg) requires A2 certificate for closer operations. Many current DJI models were sold before class labels became mandatory and operate under transitional rules.
