Which Certificate for Your DJI Drone?

The EU drone regulation offers two main certificates for the Open Category: the A1/A3 certificate and the A2 certificate. Which one you need depends on your DJI drone model and how you plan to fly it.

A1/A3 Certificate — Most DJI Pilots

DJI Mini, Air, Mavic, FPV, Avata

The A1/A3 certificate covers subcategories A1 (flying near people with C0/C1 drones) and A3 (flying far from people). This is the standard certificate for the vast majority of DJI drone pilots. DJI Mini models (C0, under 250g) can fly in A1 — over uninvolved people but not assemblies. DJI Air and Mavic models with C1 labels can fly in A1 near uninvolved people. DJI FPV, Avata, and legacy models without class labels fly under A3 rules — well away from uninvolved people.

A2 Certificate — Close to People

DJI Inspire, professional use cases

The A2 certificate allows flying C2-class drones (under 4kg) closer to uninvolved people — minimum 30m horizontal distance, reduceable to 5m in low-speed mode. This is required for professional operators who need to fly heavier DJI drones like the Inspire 3 near populated areas. The A2 certificate requires the A1/A3 as a prerequisite, plus a practical self-training declaration and a proctored theory exam.

Getting Your Certificate

The process for obtaining your EU drone certificate is standardized across all member states, though each country's national aviation authority handles registration and exams independently.

Step 1: Register as an operator. Visit your national aviation authority's website and create an account. You will register as a drone operator and receive your operator registration number (e-ID). In Germany, this is done through the LBA at lba-openuav.de. In the Netherlands, through the RDW. In France, through AlphaTango by the DGAC.

Step 2: Study the training material. Most aviation authorities provide free online training covering EU airspace classifications, drone flight rules, meteorological conditions, privacy and data protection regulations, and emergency procedures. The training typically takes 2 to 4 hours depending on your prior knowledge.

Step 3: Take the A1/A3 exam. The online multiple-choice exam consists of approximately 40 questions. You need a score of at least 75% to pass. Topics include aviation safety, airspace rules, human performance, meteorology, and drone-specific regulations. Most pilots pass on their first attempt. You can retake the exam if needed.

Step 4: Receive your certificate. Upon passing, your certificate is issued as a PDF document containing your name, registration number, authorized subcategories, and a verification QR code. This PDF is your official EU drone pilot certificate, valid for 5 years across all EU member states.

Your DJI Drone Certificate as a Wallet Pass

You have passed the exam, received your certificate PDF, and you are ready to fly your DJI drone legally in the EU. But carrying a PDF file is not practical — it is buried in your downloads folder or lost in your email. When an inspector asks for your certificate at the field, you do not want to be scrolling through files.

drone-pass.com converts your EU drone pilot certificate into a professional Apple Wallet pass. All your essential information is displayed at a glance: your full name, registration number, authorized categories (A1/A3 or A2), expiration date, and the verification QR code from your national aviation authority. It sits in your wallet app alongside your boarding passes and payment cards.

The conversion takes seconds: upload your certificate PDF, pay €2.99, and your pass is generated instantly. It works with certificates from every EU member state — Germany (LBA), Netherlands (RDW), France (DGAC), Italy (ENAC), Spain (AESA), Austria (Austro Control), and all others. Your digital pass is delivered to your phone and can also be emailed for backup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the A1/A3 or A2 certificate for my DJI drone?
For most DJI consumer drones (Mini series, Air series, Mavic series, FPV, Avata), the A1/A3 certificate is sufficient. The A2 certificate is only required if you want to fly closer to uninvolved people with a C2-class drone (under 4kg) in subcategory A2. If you fly your DJI drone in open areas away from people (A3 subcategory) or near people with a C0/C1 drone (A1 subcategory), the A1/A3 certificate covers you.
How do I get the A1/A3 certificate for my DJI drone?
Register on your national aviation authority's website (LBA in Germany, RDW in Netherlands, DGAC in France, etc.). Complete the free online training material covering airspace rules, meteorology, drone regulations, and flight safety. Then take the multiple-choice exam — typically 40 questions with a 75% pass rate required. Most pilots finish in 30 to 60 minutes. You receive your certificate as a PDF immediately after passing.
What is the difference between the A1/A3 and A2 exam?
The A1/A3 exam is an online self-study exam covering basic drone knowledge: airspace, weather, regulations, and safety. The A2 exam is more advanced — it requires the A1/A3 as a prerequisite, includes additional topics like performance planning and technical knowledge, and is typically proctored (taken at an exam center or via supervised online session). A2 also requires a declaration of practical self-training.
How long is a DJI drone certificate valid?
The A1/A3 remote pilot certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Before it expires, you must pass a refresher exam to renew it. The A2 certificate is also valid for 5 years. Your operator registration may have different renewal requirements depending on your country — check with your national aviation authority for specific terms.
Can I convert my DJI drone certificate to a wallet pass?
Yes. Once you have your EASA drone pilot certificate PDF, upload it to drone-pass.com and pay €2.99. Your certificate is converted into an Apple Wallet pass displaying your name, registration number, authorized subcategories, expiration date, and verification QR code. The pass is always accessible on your iPhone — no searching through files or emails when you need to show your certificate.
