What Is the EASA Drone Pilot Certificate?

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has established a unified framework for drone operations across Europe through EU Regulation 2019/947. Under this regulation, anyone who wants to fly a drone weighing 250 grams or more — or any drone equipped with a camera — must hold a valid remote pilot certificate.

The certificate is issued by your country's national aviation authority after you pass the required online examination. In Germany, this is the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA). In the Netherlands, it's the RDW. In France, the DGAC. Despite being issued nationally, the certificate is recognized across all EU and EFTA member states.

Once you receive your certificate as a PDF document, you can convert it into a digital wallet pass with drone-pass.com — making it easy to carry and present whenever you fly.

Open Category Subcategories Explained

A2

Advanced Certificate

An additional qualification that allows flying drones up to 4kg closer to uninvolved people. Requires the A1/A3 certificate first, plus practical self-training and a proctored theory exam. Valid for 5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EASA drone pilot certificate?
The EASA drone pilot certificate (also called the EU Remote Pilot Certificate) is an official document issued under EU Regulation 2019/947. It proves that you have passed the required training and examination to fly drones in the Open Category within the European Union. The certificate is issued by your national aviation authority (e.g., LBA in Germany, RDW in the Netherlands, DGAC in France).
Is my EASA drone license valid in all EU countries?
Yes. Under EU Regulation 2019/947, your EASA drone pilot certificate is valid across all EU and EFTA member states. A certificate issued in Germany is equally valid in France, Spain, Italy, or any other EU country. This is one of the key benefits of the harmonized EU drone regulation framework.
What are the A1/A3 and A2 drone categories?
The Open Category is divided into subcategories: A1/A3 allows flying lightweight drones (under 250g near people, heavier drones away from people). A2 is an additional qualification that allows flying drones up to 4kg closer to uninvolved people. A1/A3 requires passing an online exam, while A2 requires additional practical self-training and a proctored exam.
How long is the EASA drone license valid?
The A1/A3 certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. To renew it, you need to complete an online refresher course and pass the exam again before the expiration date. The A2 certificate is also valid for 5 years and follows the same renewal process.
